Studio Odradek’s main room measures 15 meters by 9 meters with an 8-meter ceiling and can easily accommodate a 60-piece orchestra yet is flexible enough to provide an intimate recording environment for a solo performer. Acoustics can be modified and isolation among musicians achieved with our Taytrix Gobo system and “Skywalker Sound” replica gobos. Two isolation booths, measuring 5 x 4 meters and 4 x 3 meters with  3-meter ceilings, are located at the end of the main room under the control room. All the rooms are extensively equipped with audio and video tie lines. Control Room size is 8 meters wide by 6 meters long. Premium Gotham, mic/line cables are also available running directly from the stage to the control room for use with outboard mic preamps.

Our recording department is headed by John Anderson, Classical Music Producer and Engineer, and Marcello Malatesta, staff Recording Engineer.

Main Room

Studio Odradek’s Main Room measures 15 meters by 9 meters with an 8 meter ceiling and can easily accommodate a 60-piece orchestra yet is flexible enough to provide an intimate recording environment for a solo performer. It offers a very controlled lively acoustic. Acoustics can be modified and isolation among musicians achieved with our Taytrix Gobo system.

Climate and humidity are strictly maintained via silent floor heating and cooling, evenly across the 135 square meters of floor space.

A diffuse sound field is achieved with 8 x 2D QRD “Skywalker Sound” replica movable diffusors/gobos, and a further 144 x 2D QRD “BBC style” diffusors mounted on the walls. Every corner has a wedge bass trap from floor to ceiling, a column of 115kg per cubic meter dense rock wool, which help to control the room’s bass buildup and modal distribution. The dropped ceiling is sound absorbent. The floating walls are insulated and isolated via rubber decouplers from the structural walls behind.

The result is a silent, world class lively ambience with no “boomy” bass buildup confusion and silky smooth highs with no harsh flutter echoes.

The Main Room offers playback a talkback from the control room with two Electro-Voice ELX 112P loud speakers. Communication and playback is also available via 5 x Aviom 360 personal cue mixers, with tie lines located conveniently on every wall.

The “Spheres” lights are by Next, and are dimmable and variable height. The square lighting truss is fitted with with 4 RGB LED DMX-controlled spotlights, as well as LED floodlights, and is variable height. Custom “On-Air” lamps throughout the studio ensure all personnel know when recording is in progress.

Vocal Booth

The Vocal Booth is an ample 4 x 3 meters with 3 meter ceilings. Acoustics are dry, with broadband absorption applied to all surfaces.

A view through the Drum Booth to the Main Room allows line of site visual communication among artists, and can be enhanced via closed circuit video feeds.

Climate and humidity are strictly maintained via silent floor heating and cooling, evenly across the 12 square meters of floor space.

Production

The Production Room is available for editing and other post production work when the Control Room is not needed.

The space is shared with administrative and graphics/design/video production workstations. A color printer and scanner is available, as well as an extensive music library.

Machine Room

The Machine Room houses all noise generating, ventilated equipment, including the Control Room’s PCs.

It is entirely powered on high capacity APC UPS batteries, well ventilated and air-conditioned. All recordings are securely saved to a RAID 5 Ardis DDP array of flash and spindle hard drives, ensuring both super fast read and write times and simultaneous backup of all files as they are being written.

Garden & Parking

Other Spaces

GARDEN:
With outdoor seating, deck chairs, and even a BBQ, a place to get some fresh air and sunshine, as well as the perfect area for catered events in good weather. Smoking is permitted only outdoors in the garden and in the parking zone.

PARKING:
With space for 4 cars and loading dock, with outdoor seating. Smoking is permitted only outdoors in the garden and in the parking zone. Abundant parking is generally available along the street in front of the studio.

Drum Booth

The Drum Booth is a spacious 5 x 4 meters with 3 meter ceilings, and houses our own vintage Gretsch '60's Round Badge 'Progressive Jazz’ Outfit with a 4160 Mid '60's Round Badge Snare. All drum hardware is provided, and we have a choice of stools.

Acoustics are punchy yet controlled, with high frequency diffusion achieved using cement tiles moulded from an architectural pattern designed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the luxurious Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

A wide vision of the Main Room in front and the Vocal booth in back allows line-of-site visual communication among artists, which can be enhanced via closed-circuit video feeds.

Climate and humidity are strictly maintained via silent floor heating and cooling, evenly across the 20 square meters of floor space.

Control Room

Completely isolated from the Main Room and Drum and Vocal Booths below, communication is achieved via talk back and live video feeds to each room.

Up to 5 personal Aviom 360 cue mixers are fed by our Yamaha DM2000 digital console. The main midfield monitors are Amphion Two18 with Base25. The platform of choice is Sequoia 14 but ProTools and SoundBlade are available. The video mixer has 8 channels for capturing professional backstage footage as well as live streaming concerts.

The space is 48 square meters with 4 meter ceilings, and has a separated machine room. It is a Tom Hidley “non-environment room”-inspired design, with vertical and horizontal wave guides angled to capture incoming sound from their opposite side monitor. Sound is trapped by 8cm of dense rockwool behind. Each waveguide is 50cm wide, with 1cm high density rubber glued to one side, and wrapped in fiberglass. Unabsorbed energy is directed away from engineer’s listening position to create a reflection free space, ensuring accurate monitoring. The waveguides are covered by an acoustically transparent speaker fabric (Akustikstoff Acoustic Cloth) for an elegant finish.

Four panes of 5cm thick multilayer glass (each pane with STC rating 50dB) are angled to avoid standing waves, achieving approximately 70dB or more of isolation from main room. The four panes amount to 1000kg of glass, and are mounted securely in laminated veneer lumber pillars. Floating CBI floor tiles for easy cable management. The DAW expands to four video monitors, allowing ample space for viewing software mixer, plugs, and metering. A further two monitors are dedicated to camera feeds.

All equipment and tie lines are patchable, and all equipment is securely powered through power conditioners and on UPS backup power.

The Video Mixing Desk is also in the Control Room, as well as all Main Room lighting and pulley controls.

Recreation Room

The Recreation Room offers two sofas and a TV (with Apple TV, no cable or aerial connection).

There is a small kitchen with stove top, microwave, Nescafé, and fridge and freezer, dining table, as well as two toilets, one with shower, and a clothes washer-dryer. The back door accesses the garden, with additional seating. Smoking is permitted only outdoors.

Alongside the staircase you will find the 7kW Solar Panel inverter with the Tesla Powerwall 2. This powers the entire building, including the eco-friendly heat pumps and high efficiency cooling and heating of the building (via silent radiant floor conditioning in all tracking rooms and air conditioners everywhere else). All lights in the building are 100% LED and flicker-free.
